The Illinois River is one of our MOST asked about adventures.
It doesn’t surprise me how popular this destination is because the photos from our day trips to the Illinois River are both magical and breathtaking. The Illinois River is definitely NOT to be missed whether you live in Southern Oregon – or are visiting. It is a MUST SEE.
WHAT WE TOOK:
There are 3 different stops we have made along the Illinois River:
I believe this area is called ok, here is the thing – We really just stopped anywhere with great parking and a trailhead! You really need an adventurous spirit when visiting the Illinois River for the first time because there aren’t really any road markers or signs. We got lucky with this first area because it was shallow and there was a great sandy bank to hang out on. We had the area to ourselves for a little bit, and then it got pretty crowded – but still a great spot if you’re not wanting to drive very far along the river!
our favorite spot along the river for sure! It’s quite a hike down to the cove, but once we get down there – we stay for hours! We somehow managed to get our wagon down there too! There are shallow and deep sections which make it fun for all ages. There is a GREAT cliff jumping rock right in the middle of the river. Sandy banks, lots of rocks for skipping – it is such a great spot! There is a current, but its on the other side of the bank, so easy to avoid.
The swinging bridge! This spot is a pretty far drive down the river, and the road is VERY sketchy. It gets narrow along the cliffs – but its a really cool spot if you’re willing to get there! You can google Camp McCaleb Scout Camp, and that is right where the bridge is. This is such a fun area to explore! We swam through all sorts of different sections of the river, and found frogs, lizards, and lots of fun wildlife!
The first time we went to the river, we were very un prepared! We didn’t realize how long we would spend there, what water “toys” we might have wanted – like rafts and tubes. We went back the very next weekend with a cooler full of food, a pop-up tent so we could spend the day on the river, and plenty of tubes. The water levels and speeds from one week to the next can change a lot, so be prepared for anything. Our kids love floating down with just their life jackets on – even though they are great swimmers, it’s nice to be able to float and relax in the water.
